Dr. Dawn DeSylvia

Dr. Dawn DeSylvia is a nationally recognized board-certified doctor in Family Medicine, with over 15 years experience in Functional and Integrative Medicine.

In 2000, Dr. DeSylvia’s honest approach and ability to speak to all areas of Functional and Integrative medicine lead her to help co-create and manage an Integrative Medical Program for the Los Angeles Free Clinic.

Dr. DeSylvia soon learned she had an innate ability to create programs and connect people and organizations in a meaningful and lasting fashion leading her right into medical school. In 2003, Dr. DeSylvia entered into UCLA Medical School, where she continued her passion and commitment for integrating and evolving healthcare.

After completing her UCLA residency in 2007, she accepted a faculty position as an associate clinical physician at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and the UCLA Malibu Family Practice Office.

While on staff with UCLA, she studied extensively with The Institute of Functional Medicine, The Academy for the Advancement of Medicine, The American Academy of Ozone Therapy, as well as with many of the leaders in Biologic, Environmental, and Mind Body Medicine. Through this self directed secondary medical residency she was able to cultivate an understanding of the two underlying questions about health, healing and longevity. Specifically they are, “What is really making us sick, and causing inflammation which we know fosters disease to grow and develop?” and “What does science, confirmed by direct and reproducible experience, tell us, and show us, can be done on a root (not merely symptomatic) level to facilitate and foster health, healing and longevity?”

In 2013, Dr. DeSylvia left her position at UCLA as an Associate Clinical Faculty member to form an Integrative Medical Center of her own on the Westside of Los Angeles, Ca. Whole Life Health MD.

It is her firm belief that by improving the quality of our questions we ask as doctors that we will obtain more informed and effective interventions, thus decreasing disease risks, improving outcomes, and decreasing health care costs for all parties involved.

Dr. Dawn is one of the best functional medicine doctors I know! I love sharing patients with her and getting treatments from her myself. In addition to her exceptional patient care, her vision and voice are needed in the evolution of medicine.

My Story… the Short Version

Shortly after entering medical school at UCLA in 2003 I read a report called Crossing the Quality Chasm: A new Health System for the 21st Century published by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. I was struck that such a prestigious Institute had found, what I believed to be true for quite some time. They stated that, “between the healthcare system we have, and the healthcare system we could have, exists not a gap, but a chasm.”

Twelve years later, it troubles me to report that this chasm has only increased. With exponential advances in scientific knowledge, much of which is supporting basic and ancient healing principles, it is astounding how little this information is integrated into the majority of healthcare today.

There are many reasons for this occurrence, and part of my mission is to bring about awareness of the factors hindering the existence of “a healthcare system we could (and should) have”. One factor is in medical school we are taught only to prescribe or recommend evidenced based medicine. However, for something to become “evidence based” it requires an average of 17 years and an estimated $800 million between the time of a scientific discovery and the time it takes to be integrated into medical practice. This leaves a narrow margin of things that can “afford” to get through, and often fails to take into account the whole truth.

You do not have to look far to hear of modern medicine falling short of it’s mission to serve, and above all else, “First do no harm”. The statistics are daunting. We loose more people annually to iatrogenic causes (the result of medical error or side effect) than we do in all the wars combined. We spend more money than any other country on healthcare, and yet we rank 43rd in outcomes. And some of our best medicines do more harm than good, and yet they are the standard of care.

However, I am not discouraged. I know there is a rising, and an awakening in many of the minds in medicine and other industries, that are working to create a shift and new ground for this paradigm.

An open discussion among leaders and pollination across medical specialties and modalities are required to facilitate this. The Latin root of physician is to teach, and it is here that I am deeply inspired to share the knowledge of what I know in order to evolve our healthcare in order to more fully serve.

I am inspired by knowing people everywhere are waking up to what they really need to sustain themselves and this planet. It is a most exciting time to be alive, practice medicine, and be part of this great movement toward increased health and vitality.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you!

I had an incredibly informative and educational experience with Dr. DeSylvia. I have always been healthy and active, but decided to have general blood tests done as I am now in my early 40’s. Thankfully, Dr. DeSylvia performed more advanced tests than I would have received at a traditional doctors office. In doing so, we were able to catch a few genetic risks that may otherwise have been overlooked. Thanks to her dietary suggestions, I’ve lost a few pounds, I’m eating much less sugar and processed foods. I feel much better overall, my body feels clean and efficient while my energy levels stay consistent throughout the day! It’s this kind of medicine we need to catch risks and keep us healthy! Thanks Doc!
